Drones, hums and overheard sounds, bladders and strange vibrations, air currents, roars and ticking, friction and the thudding of a drum-beating fish, the wail of a dervish’s mixer, the manic circling of a dreamt-of tone by sonic lathe-workers…

After many years of working together on the purely recording-based project Binaural Camping—during which they explored and interpreted various acoustically interesting industrial or sacred spaces through mutual performative interaction — Petr Vrba and Zdeněk Závodný decided to build on binaural camping with a concert project. One of the impulses for this step was, among other things, the meeting of two instruments of Scottish provenance in both musicians’ inventories: Instruo electronic modules and Scottish bagpipes. Gradually, other favorite instruments of both players were added: trumpet in Petr’s case and Zdeněk’s contrabass alto clarinet.

The starting point of the project Totoabas is the live modulation of acoustic wind instruments through Instruo electronic modules (primarily the granular processor Arbhar and the tunable stereo looper Lúbadh). These modules are capable of interacting with the sound signal in a way that elevates them to the level of a sophisticated musical instrument with an incredibly rich range of applications, whose limits are defined only by the performer’s abilities and by the variations in the mutual interconnection of individual modules.

The project places emphasis on structured and partially composed playing, with layers of drones and repetitive rhythmic patterns that both musicians shape in order to create a pulsating musical matter. Within this material, an improvised dialogue between the two players unfolds.

Debut release Winter Spawning is collaborative production of czech label 13 Raw and french label Circum-disc. The title, vinyl cover and some parts of the music are inspired by a legend about residents of the northern part of the Florida Gulf who had been troubled for a long time by strange sounds whose origin they could not determine. Over time, they began to feel that something was happening to their houses, because in some places the noise was so strong that it passed through the walls and made the windowpanes vibrate. No one among the locals had an explanation for it. Even the authorities were unable to uncover the cause. After some time, the people from the coastal homes most affected by the sounds organized a collection to fund serious scientific research that could solve the mystery. To everyone’s surprise, it turned out to be “sounds of love” produced by the marine fish Totoaba macdonaldi during its winter spawning. This fish, commonly known as the American drum, creates these sounds using its specialized swim bladder. That organ has become its curse, driving it to the brink of extinction and also giving rise to its nickname “marine cocaine.” The totoaba’s swim bladder is a rare commodity on the Chinese black market, as it is believed to have extraordinary aphrodisiac and rejuvenating effects. Petr Vrba is one of the most active musicians and music organizers on the Czech improvisational scene. He is one of the founders of the Prague Improvisation Orchestra (PIO) and works in numerous Czech and international bands and projects (e.g. Poisonous Frequencies, The Mond, Rhizom Fighters, Škvíry a spoje, among others). His discography includes around 40 albums. He has collaborated with musicians such as Angélica Castelló, Mathieu Chamagne, Xavier Charles, Axel Dörner, Isabelle Duthoit, erikM, Franz Hautzinger, Christof Kurzmann, Joke Lanz, Jérôme Noetinger, Peter Orins, Mikołaj Trzaska, Birgit Ulher, Michael Zerang, and many others.

Zdeněk Závodný focuses primarily on playing saxophones and clarinets. He performs in the free-jazz-core trio Frisk, the quartets Fahrzavö and Kvadrata Supro, and the Slovak band Srnka. He collaborates with the Prague Improvisation Orchestra as well as with Moving Orchestra. He also works as a cultural manager and dramaturg (Divadlo 29 and the Centre for Open Culture in Pardubice).

Après de nombreuses années de collaboration sur le projet exclusivement basé sur l’enregistrement Binaural Camping — au cours duquel ils ont exploré et interprété divers espaces industriels ou sacrés acoustiquement remarquables à travers une interaction performative mutuelle — Petr Vrba et Zdeněk Závodný ont décidé de prolonger cette expérience avec un projet de concert. L’une des impulsions pour ce passage à la scène a notamment été la rencontre de deux instruments d’origine écossaise présents dans leurs dispositifs respectifs : les modules électroniques Instruo et la cornemuse écossaise. Progressivement, d’autres instruments de prédilection des deux musiciens sont venus s’y ajouter : la trompette pour Petr et la clarinette alto-contrabasse pour Zdeněk.

Le point de départ du projet Totoabas réside dans la modulation en direct d’instruments à vent acoustiques à l’aide des modules électroniques Instruo (principalement le processeur granulaire Arbhar et le looper stéréo accordable Lúbadh). Ces modules sont capables d’interagir avec le signal sonore de manière à s’élever au rang d’un instrument musical sophistiqué, doté d’une palette d’applications extrêmement riche, dont les limites ne sont définies que par les capacités de l’interprète et par les variations dans l’interconnexion des différents modules.

Le projet met l’accent sur un jeu structuré et partiellement composé, constitué de couches de drones et de motifs rythmiques répétitifs que les deux musiciens façonnent pour créer une matière musicale pulsante. Au sein de cette matière se déploie un dialogue improvisé entre les deux interprètes.

Le premier album Winter Spawning est une production conjointe du label tchèque 13 Raw et du label français Circum-disc. Le titre, la pochette vinyle et certaines parties de la musique s’inspirent d’une légende concernant des habitants de la partie nord du golfe de Floride, longtemps perturbés par d’étranges sons dont ils ne parvenaient pas à identifier l’origine. Avec le temps, ils ont commencé à avoir le sentiment que quelque chose arrivait à leurs maisons, car à certains endroits le bruit était si fort qu’il traversait les murs et faisait vibrer les vitres. Aucun habitant ne pouvait l’expliquer, et même les autorités n’étaient pas en mesure d’en découvrir la cause. Finalement, les résidents des habitations côtières les plus affectées ont organisé une collecte afin de financer des recherches scientifiques sérieuses pour résoudre ce mystère. À la surprise générale, il s’est avéré qu’il s’agissait de « sons d’amour » produits par le poisson marin Totoaba macdonaldi lors de son frai hivernal. Ce poisson, communément appelé « tambour américain », produit ces sons grâce à sa vessie natatoire spécialisée. Cet organe est devenu sa malédiction, le menant au bord de l’extinction et lui valant également le surnom de « cocaïne marine ». La vessie natatoire du totoaba est une denrée rare sur le marché noir chinois, où on lui prête des propriétés aphrodisiaques et rajeunissantes extraordinaires. Pour une vessie d’un kilogramme, l’acheteur final en Chine paiera environ le même prix que pour une quantité équivalente de cocaïne.
